It is recommended you consume up to 3 cups of beans a week, because they are so good for your health. The more you eat, the less likely you are to have intestinal trouble. And, there are so many varieties to choose from – black beans, navy beans, kidney beans and pinto beans to name just a few.
Beans pack a lot of fiber, and fiber helps your body feel full, so you don’t need to eat as much throughout the day. Just a half cup of cooked navy beans contains nearly 10 grams of fiber.
The fiber in beans doesn’t really break down, even after you cook them. Beans have fiber in both the skin and the flesh, so really using the whole bean in cooking and recipe’s, such as dips or hummus, you’re getting all the fiber.
Beans are also good for your digestion, they contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, and so they do twice the work to keep your digestive system running smoothly. The first slows down digestion, which gives you that full feeling, and the second helps prevent constipation. Just be sure to drink lots of water, you will need it to help all that fiber move through your GI tract!
