Meet Bud, he has been an Orchard Nutrition Center customer for 20 years and when he comes in he always has a smile for our employees and knows them all by name. He likes our muffins from our in-house bakery or a sandwich for lunch from our deli. Bud has led a full and interesting life and will be 91 years young this December. When he first graduated high school, one of his neighbors had Clark Gable for a house guest and Bud and his family were invited over for lunch to meet him. His family were quite excited and Bud chuckled, “my sister was especially impressed”.
Shortly after he graduated high school Bud was drafted into the service at the age of 18 and was the youngest in his unit. He fought in WWII in the Unit “Mechanized Calvary Recognizance” for two years and traveled through N.E. France into Germany down into Austria and finally stopped in Italy at which point his commander told his unit the war was over. After the war, Bud went to Arizona State and studied to be an Architect. While at college he meet Frank Lloyd Wright the famous Architect. After college, Bud went to Los Angeles and got a job with Howard Hughes’ company and worked with Howard’s engineers to design packaging small and light enough for air born computers to go on airplanes. He worked there for about 3 years, when a couple of the engineers left to start their own company, TRW. Bud went with them and worked with TRW for 8 years designing the packaging and figuring the positioning for antennas on the U2 planes they built.
Later in life, Bud worked and raised his family in Hawthorne, CA where he raised 3 boys. When Bud retired, he headed up to Washington State to visit one of his son’s and on the way, he stopped in Redding and decided it was a good place to retire and has been here for 28 years. Bud lost his father and two oldest son’s to Cancer and has fought and won the battle against cancer himself. He now volunteers, for the past ten years, at the Discovery Shop, 2961 Churn Creek Rd, Redding CA 530-221-3970. The Discovery Shop American Cancer Society has helped fight against cancer for 50 years and proceeds go to cancer research. Bud also participates at the “Relay for Life” at Shasta College every year.
